GPW 14518 Fuel

Fuel Filter

My take off filter was heavily pitted and unusable. I purchased a reproduction one from JMP. It looks fairly nice except the finish is too metalic flake looking. It would be better to strip and do a zink plating.

The nice thing is it comes with a replaceable filter cartridge rather than the metal disk type. It mounts nicely to the firewall.

Carburetor

I am glad I did not depart on a forey into the unknown world of carburetor rebuilding. Given the many issues with drafty choke and throttle shafts, never having done it before and probably some tools I don't have either, I elected to send my carby to Scout Pilot.

After your carburetor arrives at Scout Pilot's facility the service begins with a detailed and professional assessment of the needed parts and repairs along with an invoice for those parts. The estimate comes via an email, you click on a link and it opens up the quote for the work and parts. If you accept, Scout Pilot begins the work.

When the work is done, he sends you a few images of your newly rebuilt carburetor. Mine was unrecognizable from the crappy pile of parts i sent. Here is just one of the images. In my case he was done in just a few days.

It does not end there as Scout Pilot mounts the carburetor on one of his running L-134s and takes a video of it running. A bank of gauges records the tach, dwell, vacuum and fuel pressure. Here is what I received, a peronalized video of my carburetor after the rebuild. Impressive.

I have NEVER availed myself of a more preofessional and detailed service as this one. Gents, I urge you to focus on other parts of your restoration and leave this potentially problematic endevour to Scout Pilot

Fuel Pump

I purchased a new fuel pump from RFJP and installed it right out of the package. I simply need to replace the stud mountings with bolts, but will do that later. Fuel lines are on the way for installation.

Fuel Lines

The new RFJP lines look straight forward. They mounted up nicely. The lower tank to fuel filter line seems to be missing one asphalt loom piece. I have some on order, but will have to split it to install and then secure with some e-tape under the mounting clip.

Fuel Sender and Gauge

Some of the previously made fuel sender units were made such that the float arm was too close to the edge of the fuel tank and it would rub against the tank lip. I had that problem and purchased a new JMP sender. It seems these have been made now with the arm closer to the center of the sending unit so that it fits nicely into a repro tank without touching the edge of the mouth.

The ground for the sender unit (from where it completes the circuit) goes from the mounting base of the unit, to the tank, through the fuel feed line whcih is grounded to the firewall via the woven grounding strap and clip as shown below. I tested continuity for the circuit and found it to have a good ground and chosse not to add a supplemental grounding wire as many have done. The original concept works fine.

I installed a NOS Paint Can 6v gauge, although the needle is not correct for a VEP Ford GPW.
